It is not unusual for an animals orphaned infant of one species to be accepted by a litter of a completely different species. Such was the case with Finnegan the squirrel. Finnegan is the newborn squirrel which was found at the base of a tree somewhere near Renton. Finnegan was brought to the home of Debby Cantlon for care. Debby Cantlon plans to release Finnegan, the young squirrel back into the wild when they be ready for it.
All animals know that it is very important to keep teeth clean, some of them decided to help each others in this. Some animals, particularly carnivores, also use teeth for hunting or for defensive purposes. The roots of teeth are covered by gums. Teeth are not made of bone, but rather of multiple tissues of varying density and hardness.
Teeth are among the most distinctive features of mammal species. Paleontologists use teeth to identify fossil species and determine their relationships. The shape of the animal’s teeth are related to its diet.

Do you constantly find your dog having a bit of a scratch? You might help him out with a scratch in one place only to find he is now desperate to scratch at another spot? Well, it may be your dog is not only itchy, but has a scratching problem.
It is common for all dogs to scratch at some time and many dogs do so as idle recreation, but if you find your dog is constantly scratching it may be the sign of something a little more serious and therefore it is important you identify the cause early to avoid any long term problems or medical conditions which could occur.
What Causes My Dog to Scratch?
There are several causes of dog scratching, some of the most common are:
Parasites – The most common of all the parasites is the common flea, but it is not the only little nasty that can cause your pup problems. Ticks, mites and gnats can also be the cause of your pooch scratching and in summer, flies. The good news is that most parasites can be effectively controlled with medication.
Infection – If you notice a greasy sore, or a red patch that may or may not be hairless your dog is likely to be suffering from an infection caused by bacteria, fungi or yeast.
Environmental – Another cause of itching can quite simply be something in the environment around the dog. Perhaps given it is summer your dog has been playing in the water a lot? It could therefore be a reaction to the soil or even from just being outside. Environmental causes can be from an irritation or it could be caused by an allergic reaction.
Allergenic – Just like humans can suffer from an allergic reaction so can dogs. It can be hard to correctly self diagnose an allergy yourself as there are a range of different causes, from foods, to plants, dust and fleas. All allergies can lead to skin irritation and therefore cause your dog to itch. If the scratching has only just started, think about the things that have recently changed in your dogÕs diet and environment.
Nutritional – Since we mentioned food allergies in the last point, it is worth continuing with the nutritional aspect of the food. Dogs require a balanced diet of the right nutrients in order to stay healthy. A dog with a bad diet may develop eczema and suffer from dry skin or sores. Improving the diet of your dog will help improve this condition.
Neurogenic – Finally the last issue causing your pup to itch could be neurogenic, which is an issue most often seen in a dog suffering from separation anxiety or one who is not getting enough mental or physical stimulation. To release boredom or nervous tension you may find your dog licks or chews at himself. The area where this occurs can then develop sores, which ultimately become itchy.
What Should You Do For Your Itchy Dog?
Although we have listed a number of causes of itching above, the best way to determine what the cause of the problem is to take your dog to the vet, especially if you have been keeping up a regular flea and parasite treatment program. Your vet will be able to quickly identify the cause of the itching and recommend a solution to you that will help your dog recover to their full, happy and healthy selves.
Some of the treatments for itchy dogs can include a course of antibiotics and use of an antifungal cream to treat an infection, antihistamines and change of diet or environment to deal with an allergy and a flea treatment or other similar medication to treat fleas and parasites.
The Issues with Neurogenic Scratching
Of all the causes of constant dog scratching, there is only really one which cannot be treated by using some kind of vet provided treatment or change to diet and routine and that is neurogenic scratching. Because this issue is mental, you will need to learn why the dog feels the need to lick or chew on itself first. So after you have been to the vet and ruled out the other causes of scratching, it may be time to address the fact your dog maybe developing these sores because he is nervous or anxious.
There are two steps to addressing this type of issue, the first is to solve the cause of the problem and the second is to address the resulting symptoms.
The primary cause is due to doggy boredom. Just like humans your dog may develop a habit he or she does without even thinking. For us this could be twirling our hair or cracking our fingers, but for your dog it may be chewing or licking or even scratching. So first we need to resolve the cause, you will need to stimulate your dog to ensure he or she is not bored. Take them for extra walks, play in the garden or park and work on those training commands.
To address the symptoms there are a number of options, first try spraying bitter apple or cayenne pepper where they lick if the skin is not broken from scratching. Alternatively you can use a cone from the vet, similar to that which your dog may wear after an operation to stop them licking or chewing. This should stop the sores from developing and therefore reduce the need for your dog to scratch at that area.
Finally, ensure that you talk to your vet as they will have a range of ideas for you and will suggest the best things for your dog. Remember that the earlier you identify a scratching issue, the easier it will be to diagnose and treat.
If you have a new puppy or dog, then you need to provide some sort of basic training for your pet. You can train your dog yourself or can get it trained through an obedience instructor. As dogs are like kids, they need proper training to mould them into obedient pets. With the required training, your dog can learn how to behave. You can be a happy owner if you have a trained dog. Dog training involves learning to communicate with a dog properly. You can train young pups within 2 to 3 weeks while for an older dog it can take about 7 to 8 weeks for training. Basic training can be started for pups when they are about 8 -12 weeks old for teaching commands and tricks. From about 3 to 6 months, formal classes can begin.
With understanding and patience, the trainer can impart efficient training to resolve the behavioral problems of dogs. For adequate training of your dog, you do not require any strong language or physical discipline. There are a number of methods for making training enjoyable for both your dog and yourself. Certain specific trainings are also available for dogs for doing tasks such as rescue dogs, guiding for the blind, hunting dogs etc.
When providing training for your dog, ensure that the place is open and quiet without any distractions. You can make the training experience an enjoyable one for both of you for ensuring that your dog stays happy, gains confidence and behaves well. The way and tone of speech is important in dog training. You need to use a friendly and happy tone for commands like ‘come’ and ‘heel’. Your voice can be firm and low for commands such as ‘ stay’ and ‘Sit down’. You need to appreciate your puppy or dog by offering some toy or food when it obeys the command. After the training class, you can take a little time to play with your pup or dog and this can develop a bond between both of you during the training. You should have good endurance to train and always should avoid harsh punishment.
Remember that food is important in dog training, as most dogs will love to eat. Some foods are tasty for dogs and it is also convenient for the trainer as bits of food can be kept in bag or pockets. Also note that giving food brings positive associations while training. You need to just know which food your dog likes. Never use food for behavior control; instead food should support a behavior. Never train the dog on a full stomach.
Keep the leash a bit loose when you walk with your dog because a tight leash could teach the dog to pull. Do not punish the dog after calling to you. Only one command should be given at any one time. Dogs cannot differentiate the good and bad deeds, as they know specific behavior to certain situations; therefore name a behavior to reinforce some control. Behavior will increase with reward.
You can also choose online dog training if a dog trainer or dog training school is not accessible. You can enroll for some online dog training classes and know all the secrets and techniques used by professional dog trainers for activity training, behavior training and obedience training.
Last week the story about the rescue of a small dog surfaced in Louisiana, although you might not have even been able to guess what exactly it was at first sight.
The dog was found in a ditch outside of a shelter and taken in by My Heart’s Desire, a private rescue in Houma, La. No one knows how he got there, or how he managed to survive.
His fur was so badly matted and infested with insects, including cockroaches, that he hardly resembled a dog. He was subsequently named Ripley, because no one could believe there was a dog underneath.
After undergoing a massive makeover, and loosing 2.5 lbs of fur off of his little 7.5 lb body, a purebred toy poodle emerged from the mess who was estimated to be only two years old.
“He’s physically never felt the sensation of touch. When you touch him you can tell it’s been a very, very long time since he’s been physically touched,” said Tracey Lapeyrouse, co-founder of the rescue group.
Ripley is reportedly doing well, gaining weight and loving attention while he waits to find out who his new forever family will be as people fill out applications.
When he does get adopted, his first year, including food, toys, grooming and more, will be sponsored by Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, who also made a donation to the rescue because it was just one of those stories they just couldn’t believe.
“Ripley the dog is what Ripley’s Believe It or Not! is all about,” said Tim O’Brien, VP of Communications for Ripley’s. “It’s unbelievable that a dog could even be in this condition, let alone survive and go on to potentially become a great pet for someone.”
All puppies can be mischievous and seem to be getting into just about everything they can in order to annoy you simply by getting themselves into mischief or even worse harm themselves. At the same moment nevertheless they can be extremely engaging, which, considering the things they can get into whilst they are being mischievous is lucky for them. living in the “human world” is difficult for these little guys.
Does your puppy behave badly? If it does don’t worry too much. It is possible to, with no more than a little time and perseverance teach him to be able to conduct himself acceptably. An extremely common puppy problem which I will focus on in this article is how to stop puppy biting and nipping. By using the information offered, in a short time you will be able to find out how to stop a puppy from biting and nipping.
How to stop a puppy from biting.
Whenever your puppy is having fun it is simply normal that it will nip, regrettably it is very likely that as he gets wound up that he will nip you. However the truth of the problem is, that regardless of how charming he is or how innocent it all looks, you now have to be able to, as a conscientious pet owner, prevent the nipping as soon as it begins.
Puppies need to be trained at the beginning, that even whilst having fun, that their teeth must on no account make contact with a person’s flesh. By preventing your puppy nipping early on you will reap the rewards later on as your puppy develops, since having previously been trained never to bite he will be a lot less prone to bite somebody later on which is particularly significant if you own a big dog, even though small dogs can easily inflict a serious bite if their nipping behavior is not curtailed while young.
Whilst playing with your puppy, it’s essential to direct any kind of biting actions towards his toys. Soft ones which have a satisfying give whilst in your puppy’s mouth work best, but in addition obtain a number of rubber ones which can be able to be packed with goodies that will maintain his attention and help him whilst he is teething.
Puppies even as young as 8 weeks old are still able to be taught that it is definitely not acceptable to bite. If when having fun with your puppy he bites you, say “ouch” in a steady low voice, and take away whatever part of you he has in his mouth.
If as is often the situation your puppy ignores you and carries on biting, simply pay no attention to him and move away. If as you move away he follows after you, step through a door and shut the door after you leaving him on the other side. Just leave him there for a little while, just sufficient for him to begin to wonder why you have left him behind.
By doing this you will be teaching your puppy to stop biting due to the fact that once he bites he stops the fun. He is going to rapidly discover that you are going to only carry on playing with him as long as he curbs his biting. Before long he will realize and it will be noticeable that your puppy will cease biting as hard and less often. You just carry on applying this procedure and as he progresses, begin saying “ouch” to the gentle bites and he will understand not to bite or nip anymore.
